Want your child to go 3.2 years further in school? Bring home books. Lots of books. 500+ to be exact. A new study published in the journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility has shown that being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as having parents parents who have a university education, reports Science Daily.
Apparently, for years teachers have felt that the strongest predictor of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated, but now this study shows that no matter what the education level of the parents, as long as there are books around, kids will stay in school longer.
Every college professor I’ve known has an office full of books and a home packed with more. Coincidence? Either way, another excuse to hunker down with a good book... No matter what your age.
