Spending time with positive people is a surefire way to lift your mood
This Sunday, I met my dear friend Greg for lunch. Greg is one of those fortunate individuals who always seems to be in a good mood. This is, however, not an accident. Greg skillfully seeks out positive, enduring experiences. For example, sitting opposite me, I cannot help but notice the bright green t-shirt he wears that reads: “GREEN MONSTAH” that refers to the famed green wall inside of Boston’s Fenway Park baseball stadium.
He told me a funny story about his recent trip to Boston, during which he took a tour of the famous Fenway park. And on the way over, the cab driver who refused to take a tip because Greg was wearing a special 1925 baseball cap. “I don’t take tips from people who respect history,” the cabbie exclaimed. Well, I can tell you that we both had a hearty laugh over that!
Naturally, when Greg and I parted after lunch, I was definitely feeling happy. Believe it or not, there is solid evidence and research that shows happiness is contagious. You have a better chance of being happy if you surround yourself with positive friends.
How to Get Happy with Friends
1) At least once a week, meet a happy friend face to face. Research shows that positive people can shift your mood more if you are directly in their presence, as opposed to over the phone.
2) Share your own positive experiences with friends. Sure, it’s okay to have a “rant” every now and then, but make a point of sharing your joys with others!
3) If you don’t have anyone close, start cultivating friendships with others. Smile whenever you can. It’s contagious and feels good, too!
