Don't Let the Heat Beat You: 4 Things You Can Do

Posted by Andrew Kirschner, D.O.

It’s 96 degrees. With the heat index it feels like 102. Extreme weather is hard on everyone, but if you are dealing with a painful condition, the weather can dramatically affect how good or bad you feel. While you can’t change the weather (without moving to another climate) there are some simple things you can do to keep from being a victim of the weather.

Stay active. Even on the hot days. A long walk, a workout in the gym- it doesn’t matter- keep moving. Remember, if you rest you rust.

As always, hydrate. The heat and mugginess can cause dehydration even when you are standing still.

Maintain a steady temperature. As you transition from inside to outside and back, take steps to maintain a steady body temperature, such as a light sweatshirt to prevent being shocked by air conditioning.

Stretch. Many people retain more fluids in the heat, causing joints to swell. Even small changes in your joints can alter your body mechanics to set you up for injury. These subtle changes are most prominent in the morning, so take a couple of moments to stretch out when you first get out of bed.

Don’t take it for granted that your body can simply adjust to the heat. These simple steps can help prevent extreme weather from bringing you down.
