The NFL season kicks off tonight with a New Orleans Saints/Minnesota Vikings showdown, followed by 12 games on Sunday and another two on Monday night.
I have to admit, though, that every year around this time I seem to "fall" (pun intended) off the healthy-eating bandwagon, largely because of the nachos and wings I feel compelled to eat whenever football is on television. I remember being horrified -- but not quite deterred -- the first time I read that to burn off two pieces of fried chicken, you'd have to do the wave about 3,220 times.
My only saving grace? Homemade guacamole -- my snack of choice whenever I watch a game at home or take something along to a friend's tailgate party. It's not a low-calorie food in itself, but I toss in tons of chopped up tomatoes after mixing it all up to give it more volume, and I serve it with carrots and bell pepper slices rather than with chips. Okay, maybe a few chips, too.
