Rainy day blues are contagious! Small talk is filled with grunts and groans about feeling wet and cold. If you were unaffected by the weather, you will quickly be reminded that you should be! By mid-day, going outside is coupled with an aggravated sigh and a hurried compressed posture. Your physical and emotional disposition defends its ground, as if the rain were going to wash your very existence away.

Rain is one of nature's miracles

Imagine rainy day small talk revolving around how the rain is cleaning the streets, hydrating the trees and filling our reservoirs. You enjoy the coziness of clustering under overhangs and shopping a bit longer to stay dry; or, you get lost in daydreams set off by the contemplative song made by raindrops hitting your umbrella; or perhaps, you spontaneously surrender to getting wet just because it’s fun! All of these experiences give us the feeling of being a part of Mother Nature and a part of something much greater than ourselves.

Rain reminds us that we’re a part of a much greater whole.

When we become defensive, in regard to the rains, we’re separating ourselves from the whole of nature, which we are a part of. Appreciating nature’s expression unites us with each other, the planet, and ourselves. Appreciating rain could be compared to welcoming tears of exhilaration. There are times that life feels overwhelmingly full and the intensity overflows. This is what happens in the clouds. When the tears well-up life is nourished and intuitive, but when tears freeze-up life becomes rigid and defensive.

Alleviate rainy day blues by turning raindrops to teardrops.

Tears of gratitude and love energize your life. Be reminded that overwhelm is a shared reality in all the rhythms and cycles of nature. You become full with your life’s expressions so you can then share them. Recognize the rain as a gift, a soulful offering.

When the rains come, before setting out into the streets, sigh in gratitude. It is a miracle!
