Posted by

The junk drawer: We know you have one. Whether yours is in the kitchen, office, garage (or all three), stay green and organized with a DIY drawer tray, courtesy of professional organizer Jamie Novak. Collect leftover food cans and wrap with an old scarf or twine. There you go: Organized and pretty.

  • I've actually already done this! It turns out that I didn't really need that junk drawer and I turned it into the kids school drawer! One side for my son and one side for my daughter. The most recent papers gets put on top and every month I purge through the papers and recycle the old papers!

  • I use uniform cardboard boxes (specifically 1# Velveta) for drawer organizers. We are all creatures of habit and I found myself buying the same items at the grocery store. Pens, pencils, etc fit perfectly in the Velveta box. It requires looking at what you would recycle or throw away with a new eye. On the same note, I was at my local building supply store and had an 'aha' moment in the hardware aisle. The boxes were perfect for inside my cabinets to keep rarely used like items together. I labeled the contents on an index card, taped it to the end and put the box on the top shelf in my laundry room. No more looking for sunscreen, chalk, floor protectors for the chairs, etc.
