Econundrum: Homemade Starch for Ironing?

Posted by

Got a green dilemma? Ask me! I'll be answering a new question each week.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for a “green” starch I can use when ironing dress shirts?—Meredith Snider

A: Look no further than the original, a box of cornstarch, preferably organic (produced without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetic modification). Add a tablespoon to a pint of water in a spray bottle. Shake, spray, and iron. For dark-colored clothing, add the cornstarch to a cup of water mixed with a cup of black tea.
