Challenge of the Day: Detox Your Bug Spray

Your typical bug spray contains DEET—a chemical that has been shown to have neurotoxic effects in animal studies. As an alternative to DEET that still keeps bugs at bay, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends products made with nontoxic oil of lemon eucalyptus.

  • angie kidd -- THANK YOU for your wonderful post. as soon as my mouthwash and citronella oil mixture runs out i will try it. i don't care for the smell of listerine in any formulation, but mixed with citronella oil it becomes far more pleasant. it seems to last forever and works just great. yours sounds a step better, even!

  • Essential oil of lemongrass is another one which is very pleasant smelling and is very good for keeping those bugs away. If you have ants in your garden and they are biting you, spray on some peppermint hydrosol, or make up a spray with 20 drops of vodka, 20 drops of peppermint essential oil and fill it with water in 90 ml sprayer. That will keep them off you as no bugs seem to like peppermint.
