We harvested the herbs and veggies from our communal garden and had a potluck dinner party. The drinks, including spiked thyme-ginger lemonade and basil watermelon margaritas were the biggest hit. Cheers!
Basil Watermelon Margarita by Fred Dexheimer, master sommelier
Recipe based on 1/4 of whole watermelon and making approx. a quart / 32oz of the Margarita
-Cut up and blend 1/4 of whole watermelon (one that is cut and wrapped in store is easiest)
- strain the juice using a fine sieve/strainer/chinois and discard solids (should yield about a quart / 32oz of juice)
- if you like basil you can add a couple basil leaves to blender and strain off with juice
Recipe using a 32 oz quart deli container
- 8oz blanco Tequila (Sauza is good and economical)
- 4oz Triple Sec
- juice of 3 limes
- 16oz of watermelon juice
- stir, add ice and enjoy
Ginger-thyme Lemonade
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 1/2 oz. fresh ginger, peeled and chopped OR 1 oz ginger-honey tonic (I used New Chapter's brand)
1/2 oz. fresh thyme leaves
2 cups fresh lemon juice
1-2 shots of Irish whisky (optional)
In saucepan, combine water, sugar, ginger and thyme over medium-high heat. Stir; remove from heat. Once cool, strain into a pitcher and add lemon juice. Stir. Pour and serve over ice. Add whiskey just before serving.
