A Letter From South India: Yoga On and Off the Mat

Posted by

Since writing this blog, I made it to Deenabandhu. This is 16 year-old Megha, who I also sponsor. She is like a sister to me!

Greetings from Karnataka, South India! I’m so grateful to be on my annual voyage to the subcontinent, a place I’ve been fortunate to travel extensively through since 2005.

The primary reason I keep returning is to spend time with the children at the Deenabandhu Trust Children’s Home in Chamarajanagar, a rural district of Karnataka.  I’ll share more about this model institution for destitute and orphaned children in the weeks to come. (*Note: these blogs will post about 1 week after being written).

Right now, I’m charging through the countryside from Bangalore to Mysore on one of India’s fastest trains, the Shatabdi Express, which shaves about 1 hour off a 3+ hour trip.  While the air-conditioned coaches are nice and efficient, I do miss the open-air, crowded sleeper cars of the regular train.  (Though I doubt I’d be writing this blog from there!) After lunch with friends in Mysore, I’ll make another 2+ hour journey to Deenabandhu.  It’ll be so nice to see everyone!   I arrived in India very late Tuesday and was fortunate to spend 2 nights at my friend and fellow Yoga Gives Back member Anand Varajand’s family’s house.  They showered me with such loving hospitality!

Over the next few weeks, I’m eager to share stories from the orphanage, in particular how Yoga Gives Back has assisted some of the women and girls there over the past 9 months.  There will be more cooking lessons from my dear friend and adopted Aunt Gayathri.  If you missed it, here’s a link to last year’s popular recipe for ragi roti.  Speaking of food - fingers crossed, we’ll also make a journey to Mumbai to visit my wonderful friend Chef Vikas Khanna on the set of MasterChef India, which he’s hosting! I hope to send a few other surprises your way, too…
