Challenge of the Day:Give Your Home a Festive Scent -- Naturally

Holiday scents can set a festive mood and lift your spirits, but according to the National Resources Defense Council, 12 out of 14 air fresheners contained hormone-disrupting chemicals. A better way to infuse fragrance is to make your own all-natural spray: Combine 30-40 drops total of a combination of essential oils (we like citrus and clove, pine or peppermint) with one cup of water in a spray bottle, and spritz to your nose's content.

  • I think its a wonderful idea to use essential oils instead of commercial air fresheners. I am wondering though what the natural mixture would do to hardwood floors and other surfaces. Any thoughts?

  • Emily, Wouldn't that depend on which carrier and how much you used? I can't imagine how spritzing into a room, or even on the stuffed furniture would hurt anything. Of course you would want to avoid directly spraying say pianos or glass.

  • I have been this method for a couple of months now, and I have read that using distilled water will mix with the essentials oils better. I love this idea in the bathroom!

  • I avoid commercial air fresheners, since one at a friend's house appears to have given me a bad case of hives. My idea of holiday scent is the smell of freshly baked breads, pies, cakes, or cookies, or the wonderful aroma of soup simmering on the stove.
