Natural Beauty Gurus: The 10 Questions I Always Ask, Donna Perillo

Posted by

Name: Donna Perillo
Occupation: Owner, Sweet Lily Natural Nail Spa & Boutique
Location: New York City

Who is your beauty inspiration? Christy Turlington. I just adore her. She’s a natural beauty inside and out; a businesswomen, mother, activist, and drop-dead gorgeous. Best of all, she makes it all look effortless.

What product/treatment/beauty indulgence do you spend the most on? Good, organic essential oils and Pratima’s Ayurvedic facial cream.

What do you spend the least on? Facials. I should, but juggling Sweet Lily and family, I never have the time.

What does age mean to you? Age is a wonderful thing. With it comes knowledge and a sense of calm that you don’t have in your twenties. I find the curveballs I dodge are also very empowering. Each little line on my face and gray hair that pops up on my head represents my life experiences. I embrace the moments I’ve survived and forge ahead.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about skin/hair/nails/beauty this year? That I’m not a huge fan of beauty trends that try to be “natural” but aren’t. All the rage this year has been 3-Free gels. I’ve seen a large number of our clients veer off to try them at other salons, only to come back to Sweet Lily because it wrecked their nails. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

What’s the one thing you do (not product-based) that you think affects your appearance more than anything else? Sleep. Nothing better for the brain and the body.

Why naturals? The skin is our body’s biggest organ. Toxic chemicals from fragrances and ingredients in lotions, perfumes, soaps, etc. get absorbed very quickly through our skin, so it’s critical for people to become more conscious of the beauty products they’re choosing. What they think is making them pretty now has the potential to make them sick later on.

  • Sweet Lily is a little oasis of calm in Tribeca. Donna is lovely and true to what she says - you won't find toxic chemicals here. Everything is sparkling clean and the staff is super-friendly. This is the only place I'll go for a pedicure.
