Add Heart-Healthy Pistachios to Your Diet

Posted by Whole Living Daily

It's World Pistachio Day: Have you incorporated this sweet, buttery nut into your daily diet? If not, now's a good time to start. Pistachios are a good source of phytosterols, which help lower cholesterol and may help protect against breast and prostate cancer. They're great on their own as a snack -- a handful of about 50 kernels is only 160 calories -- or added to veggie dishes and frittatas.

If you've got some extra time in the kitchen, try them in this Moroccan Carrot Salad for dinner, or in these hearty Breakfast Bars tomorrow morning. The possibilities are endless. Go nuts!

  • I said no to this one for one reason and only one reason. I have no pistachios in the house and I have no desire to go food shopping on a Sunday (mad house day at the food store).

  • You can find unsalted pistachios at some health food stores which is really the healthiest for you. They taste great in quick breads such as cranberry nut. I also make my own trail mix and include them along with other healthy nuts (such as sprouted almonds) and dried fruits, cherries and cranberries, etc.

  • I eat them almost everyday. Yum!
