Many people use humidifiers during dry winter months, hoping to soothe dry sore throats or ease asthma- or cold-induced coughs. To prevent buildup in the humidifier, change its water supply daily and clean it a few times a week using a solution of vinegar and water (follow the manufacturer's instructions). Martha Stewart recommends using distilled or demineralized water to reduce buildup and letting the tank dry completely before refilling.
