It’s gray and chilly in New York today, but it’s March, and I like to think that means we can officially get excited about spring. After work, as I trek from the Whole Living offices to the subway, I’m noticing more and more daisy shoots, tree buds, and chirping birds every day.
The warming weather means now is the perfect time to get into a walking routine. And striding, in my humble opinion, is the perfect exercise: It gets your heart pumping. It’s easy on your joints. Research shows that walking regularly can whittle your waistline, protect against heart disease, lower your blood pressure, and boost your mood and energy levels. Plus, unlike ducking into a subway or pulling out onto a highway street, it gives you the opportunity to admire the sprouts and buds of spring.

Orthaheel and Dr. Weil Integrative Footwear are kicking off a nationwide Walkabout campaign on March 27, encouraging women to pack in 30 minutes of walking a day over a 28-day period. They’re looking for 50 enlistees across the U.S. to join the challenge. Participants will snag a wellness kit and a new pair of kicks. Step up (sorry!) here, and get moving!
