A Skin Care Essential: Yoga Off the Mat

Posted by

I was recently reunited with a beloved skin care product: Mario Badescu’s facial spray with aloe, herbs, and rose water. My dear aunt, who’s been visiting Mario Badescu’s exceptional natural skin care spa for about 40 years, gave me a bottle for my birthday. I’m not the type of person to make public “must have” lists but, if I were, this refreshing spray would be on it!

Mario Badescu’s all-natural mist is made from a few simple, nourishing ingredients: deionized water, aloe vera gel, bladder wrack extract, rose extract, various herbal extracts, gardenia extract, and propylene glycol. A bit more about the three major ingredients:

  • Aloe is a botanical esteemed for its ability to hydrate and soothe dry, sensitive, or irritated skin.
  • Bladder wrack extract, derived from a common iodine-loaded seaweed, is hailed for being rich in minerals and antioxidant vitamins that revitalize skin. It also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

A little food for thought: Did you know that bladder wrack was the original source of iodine? After it’s 1811 discovery, it was used extensively to treat goiter, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency.

  • Rose Extract: This extract, which comes form the rosa centifolia flower, is credited for its astringent, deodorizing, and tonic qualities. It also smells delicious.

So how to use this gentle, refreshing mist?

Spray it on your face, neck, or hair any time of day. It can be used on top of day or night creams to give them a hydrating boost. It can also be used to set makeup. Its lovely scent, rosy but not too floral, is uplifting. Something I love most about the spray is that it’s an excellent substitute for lotion or cream after a midday shower or face rinse. This is important for someone who’s physically active with yoga teaching, practice, and cardiovascular exercise (such as rollerblading or biking). I prefer to only apply SPF lotion in the morning and night cream at the end of the day (unless, of course, I’m out in the sun a lot), as too much opaque moisturizing can cause me to break out. Therefore, this spray is the ideal fix!

Oh, it’s also really reasonably priced. A little goes a long way. Check it out here.
