Smoothie Wednesday: Hemp Protein Shake with Blueberries

Posted by

Shakes made with less fruit and more quality vegetarian protein powder, such as hemp, are becoming more and more popular in weight-loss cleanse programs. Athletes are also embracing hemp shakes as a way to refuel after intense workouts. I prefer these protein-packed smoothies as a quick, nutritious meal on those days when my 1-year-old son takes charge of our plans for the day. This is one of my favorite recipes. And no, despite what you may think, you will not get a marijuana-like high from eating hemp seeds or sipping on hemp protein in a smoothie; hemp, or Cannabis sativa, is not the same as the drug Cannabis indica.

Hemp Protein Shake with Blueberries
Serves 1 (~400 calories)

1 cup almond milk (store-bought or homemade)
1/2 cup water
2 Tbsp hemp protein powder
1/2 cup frozen blueberries, preferably organic
1 cup loosely packed chard, preferably organic
1 Tbsp almond butter
1 Tbsp Udo’s Oil (optional)
1/16 tsp Stevia or honey (optional)
3-4 ice cubes, to thicken

Better-for-you ingredients
Hemp is an increasingly popular vegetarian protein. It contains all essential amino acids and is easily digestible. It also has fiber and provides a little bit of healthy fat (in the recommended 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio). Ideally, as you beauties know, we are supposed to consume twice as many omega-3s as we do omega-6s to allow our bodies to synthesize what it needs to support a vibrant body.

Udo’s oil is a supplement rich in essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It can be taken in a liquid or capsule form.

Directions
Place ingredients into a good powerful blender until smooth and creamy. Thin with water or thicken with ice if desired. Enjoy!
