Do you love to run?

Share the love by participating in the fourth annual National Running Day (NRD) on Wednesday, June 6!

National Running Day, held on the first Wednesday of June, not only celebrates the virtues of running, but also the sport’s uniting power. The event is a collaborative effort of the foremost running organizations in the United States, including the Atlanta Track Club, the Boston Athletic Association, the Chevron Houston Marathon, the Chicago Area Runners Association, Competitor Group, Inc., the Little Rock Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, New York Road Runners, the Oregon Track Club, RunningUSA, the Twin Cities In Motion, and USA Track & Field. Each year, these groups work together to organize nationwide running events and manage the fantastic interactive runningday.org website. The site is a forum for running enthusiasts to organize group events, share tips and tricks of the trade, and make powerful and empowering “I RUN…” statements.

NRD is no small happening. Last year more than 150 NRD events were posted. And, what exactly are those “I RUN…” statements? Really, whatever inspires runners to hit the road. Last year’s favorites included:

  • I RUN...because it's cheaper than therapy.
  • I RUN... because my wife is a helluva baker.
  • I RUN...so my husband still has to chase me.
  • I RUN...to spend time with my dad.
  • I RUN...to be prepared in case of a zombie apocalypse.

The website also features some great fitness related discounts, such as reduced race registration fees and merchandise deals. In celebration of National Running Day, NYRR is working with select merchants to provide great health and fitness offers to our community--to help motivate athletes of all ages and abilities as they “Run for Life.” This will include discounts from local health and fitness retailers.

There are also a few NRD events on tap in the New York area. NYRR will be hosting a Mighty Milers fun run at Icahn Stadium. They’re expecting more than 2,500 kids from NYC public schools to attend. If you’re unfamiliar with NYRR’s inspiring youth community work, please check out the blog I wrote late last year. They will also have water stations set up in Central and Prospect Park. (As I live right near the latter, I might just have to go for a run!) Another fun event in Prospect Park is going to be the Singlets Mixer, where runners can run with and meet reps from local running teams.

Speaking of charitable work, NRD is an excellent way to fundraise for nonprofit organizations. Over the years, running has evolved into an exceptional way to fundraise for important causes. Find charities to run here.

Don’t live in the United States? You can still get involved! There are a number of international activities already slated for this year, such as A.S.O. of France’s run through the country. Find or start an event on the NRD website.

Yoga brings stability and calm into every discipline of Sophie Herbert's life. She is an alignment focused yoga teacher (and perpetual student), life coach, and a Whole Living contributing editor. She graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art, where she nurtured her passion for documentary photography. Sophie has also shared her knowledge of yoga at the Prana Yoga Center in Astana, Kazakhstan. Currently, she teaches at the Park Slope Yoga Center www.parkslopeyoga.com and Prema Yoga www.premayogabrooklyn.com in Brooklyn, Sangha House www.sanghahousenyc.com in Manhattan, and privately. She is in the midst of her life coach certification and taking on clients at a reduced rate. Sophie is also an avid cook.
