Thousands of Yogis Flock to Times Square for Summer Solstice Yoga

Posted by

New Yorkers celebrate the summer solstice with free yoga in Times Square on Wednesday.

This morning, I did yoga...with 10,000 other New Yorkers in the middle of Times Square. No, I did not participate in some radical flash mob, but the 10th annual Athleta Mind Over Madness to celebrate the summer solstice. My friend Eliana asked me to check it out with her and, unsurprisingly, my first thought was "How can I get my zen on in the holy epicenter of hustle and bustle?" Putting my reservations aside, I instead turned the morning session into a personal challenge: If I could actually quiet my mind in Times Square (of all places), then I must be getting somewhere with my practice, right?

Time for some side angle pose.

Aside from the occasional taxi cab horn blast-off, I really did tune out the city riff raff. The community grew stronger as the class went on, everyone stretching in their usual poses in a quite unusual setting. It was a neat juxtaposition to witness thousands of yogis amidst flashy billboards and Broadway musical signs. Definitely worth the experience.

This event kicked off a whole season of free outdoor yoga sessions. In NYC? Be sure to check out these classes in Bryant Park.
