Something I love about my new radio show, Life Coaching with Sophie, is coming up with a theme everyday for my listeners. The daily theme also keeps me on my toes! On Tuesday of this week, my theme was something I consider very important. Likewise, it’s something I try to inspire my yoga students, coaching clients, and even friends to do. For that reason, I wanted to share it with you.
What is it?
Giving yourself permission to do something you love.
When? Today and everyday.
What might that something be?
Something that honors who you are and what’s important to you. Maybe it’s something you know will make you laugh or smile. Maybe it’s allowing yourself to take that 20-minute break from work to go for a brisk walk in order to counter a midday slump. Maybe it’s giving yourself permission to pick up a long-lost and well-loved hobby. I definitely have one of those in mind--I’ll be moving to a larger place soon and really want to pick up sewing again!
For some reason, giving ourselves permission to do things we know nourish our body and soul, even if it’s just for a brief time, can be easier said than done. Overwhelmed with work? It definitely can be very easy to make excuses about why we can’t break free from the tasks at hand. The inner critic might even pipe up and say things like, “You don’t deserve to do something you love right now! Work is far more important!”
We always deserve to prioritize self-care and thread a healthy balance of it into our lives. Every day. Now, I’m not saying abandon all tasks right now and go to a spa. What I am doing is inviting you to honor how powerful a daily does of you time can be. In fact, there’s been a great deal of recent research reinforcing the notion that giving oneself time to step away from work and do something enjoyable actually leads to greater productivity in the long run. Such is certainly the case with me.
On Tuesday, for example, I made it a point to go to a yoga class in the evening. I’d been teaching and working all day (and enthusiastically at that!). Certainly, I had more work ahead of me. Attending class, however, proved medicinal in processing the day and recharging my battery.
So, what will you give yourself permission to do today? This week?
Enjoy and good luck!
