A New Way to Screen for Skin Cancer

Posted by

Each year, more than two million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer. The earlier the disease is detected, the easier it is to treat.

That's why it's important to keep close watch on your skin. And now there's an easy way to do so: The University of Michigan recently released an app called UMSkinCheck. This free program, which is downloaded on iPhones and iPads, helps you monitor moles and lesions.

Designed by dermatologists, UMSkinCheck gives step-by-step directions on how to perform a skin self-exam. It instructs you to take photos from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet; the program stores these 23 shots so you can compare suspicious changes in any marks or blemishes.

The app also includes informational videos, plus healthy skin tips. It also sends a reminder message every 30 to 90 days, so your skin check won't slip your mind. Now that's an app worth downloading.

After you finish your self-exam, pamper your skin with our at-home spa guide.

  • II have a scar on my right cheek from a large mole removed when I was three years old. It was itchy and the bumpy red part bled when scratched. Turns out it was Basal Cell Carcinoma.
