A Skin-Protecting Spice: Cardamom

Posted by

Now that the days are getting shorter, protecting your skin probably isn't your first concern. But the sun's UV rays can be just as dangerous in the fall and winter. For some extra protection, try sprinkling on a little cardamom into your eats and drinks.

A preliminary study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food showed that this warm, earthy spice slowed skin cancer growth. One possible explanation: Cardamom raised levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant.

To sneak some of the spice into your daily diet, consider brewing a mug of cardamom tea. Or use it in a detox cherry-banana smoothie or whip up a spiced hot chocolate.
