Who is your beauty inspiration? My grandmother. I would sit in Mommom’s bathroom as a little girl, marveling at her seemingly endless morning routine, watching as she primped and coiffed with such care each day. Her involved beauty routine was unknown to anyone but her (and my little self!) and that was precisely how she liked it. I hear her words echo in my head each morning as I endeavor to achieve the appearance of such beauty: “If you do it right, no one should ever know you are wearing makeup.”
What product/treatment/beauty indulgence do you spend the most on? I splurge on two staple items: moisturizer and a brow kit. These are my everyday basics, those which I use without fail—and often I limit myself to only these two to allow my skin to breathe. The first is my Astara Blue Flame Oil-Free Moisturizer. It absorbs perfectly into my skin and keeps my face feeling (and looking) hydrated all day long. My second is the Jane Iredale Super-Shape Me Eyebrow kit. Seeing me use it daily has inspired countless friends to incorporate brow shaping and grooming into their own routines, as that one simple change makes quite the difference. Brows make or break a face.
What do you spend the least on? When all else fails in the world, Dr. Bronners Magic Soap will always be by my side; I am never without a small bottle. It is reliable, inexpensive, and has more uses than anyone can or should count.
What does age mean to you? Age means experience. And with experience comes memories, some of which happen to be recorded on one’s body. While wrinkles are not a huge part of my life yet (I am only 19, after all), smile lines and scars certainly are. Both remind me of particular moments from my life, times of endless laughter and also deep pains. This growing wealth of happenings, adventures, stories, and human interactions is what I treasure most about age.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about skin/hair/nails/beauty this year? I have learned so much this year about beauty and body, but one thing that has particularly fascinated me is the power of raw botanicals. The skin care line which I use predominately (Astara) and one of my very favorite makeup lines (RMS Beauty) are based upon these very principles. The naturally-occurring and minimally-processed enzymes restore skin vitality and overall health with nutrients that heal, preserve, protect, and infuse life into your body’s largest organ.
What’s the one thing you do (not product-based) that you think affects your appearance more than anything else? Drinking a ton of water! I notice such a distinct difference in my skin when I am well hydrated. And sleep, although, I am sad to say, that one falls by the wayside far too frequently.
Why naturals? Because we can. There are so many factors in the world today that we, as individuals, cannot control, but by actively choosing not to introduce additional chemicals into our lives (in beauty and personal care products or any number of other lifestyle choices), we can reduce the burden on our bodies and planet. I endeavor to live by a precautionary principle: Why risk my health and well-being when I don’t have to? We are incredibly fortunate to live in a world where natural and organic items are plentiful and widely accessible, so I choose to make that safer choice.
