Beth Bader is co-author (with Ali Benjamin) of "The Cleaner Plate Club: More Than 100 Recipes for Real Food Your Kids Will Love." Beth was raised on a farm in northern Missouri long before raising your own chickens and the u-pick local strawberry patch were “cool.” Previously, Beth kicked around in the Caribbean studying coral reef ecology and sharks. As a freelance photojournalist, she covered marine conservation topics and environmental issues. She eventually left her dream job and applied her shark wrangling skills to parenthood duty.
Tied down in the Midwest with a “normal” life she loves -- but shocked and dismayed at our industrialized food system -- Beth embraced local foods and “making the world a better place for her child one meal at a time.” She writes for Eat Local Challenge, and is currently working with local food and food policy groups to organize a collaborative Eat Local Kansas City resource site to help consumers access healthy, local foods and support small family farms in her region.
My philosophy: If I can wake up each day and laugh with my child, come home and my family and friends are safe and well, that’s the best day ever no matter what else happened in between.
If I weren’t doing what I do now, I’d probably be: a shark researcher again. But, it’s crazy hard to get health insurance in that field for some reason.
Favorite piece of advice: Question authority.
