Clinical Nutritionist
Home: New York, NY
Bio: Gena Hamshaw is a certified clinical nutritionist with an emphasis on plant-based nutrition. She works with clients in New York and around the world to find simple, affordable and lasting steps toward a cleaner, greener diet. Gena's focus is on emotional balance; she helps her clients to break the cycle of fad dieting and settle into a lifestyle that is uniquely tailored to individual need. She writes about body image, green living, and a plant-based lifestyle on her popular blog, Choosing Raw.
Gena is a regular columnist for VegNews magazine and has written for Kris Carr's Crazy Sexy Life website. When she’s not blogging, meeting clients, or cooking, Gena works as a book editor and takes long strolls through NYC’s Union Square farmers’ market.
My philosophy: I believe in a lifestyle that brings us close to nature: This means whole foods, simply prepared; avoidance of chemicals, toxins, and pollutants; and health practices that marry cutting edge science with ancient wisdom. While I celebrate the vegan lifestyle in my own life, I don't believe that one must eat an exclusively plant-based diet in order to thrive. I do believe that all people can experience their best health by eating as many plant foods as possible, and it's my goal to inspire them in that direction!
If I weren’t doing what I do now, I’d probably be a doctor—who moonlights as an organic farmer.
Favorite piece of advice: Add first; subtract later.
